Decide whether it is cosmetic
A scuff is cosmetic. A crack that passes through the shell is not — it is a path for solvent and dust to reach the electronics, and it should be dealt with.

Check the trigger separately
A trigger that does not return is sometimes just ink-clogged rather than broken. Clean it before ordering a replacement assembly.

Work on a tray
Housing fasteners are small and often of two different lengths. Lay them out in the order they came off.

Transfer the seals
Gaskets and edge seals are easy to leave behind on the old panel, and leaving them behind recreates the ingress problem you are fixing.

Check it seats flat
Reassembled, the machine should sit flat against a pack with no rock. A panel slightly proud will show up as uneven print before anybody blames the housing.

Frequently asked questions
- My coder housing is cracked but it still works. Does it matter?
- Yes, more than it looks. A crack through the shell is an open path for ink mist, solvent vapour and plant dust to reach the board and the connectors, and board failures from ingress are expensive and usually arrive weeks after the crack rather than immediately. It is one of the cheapest parts on the machine to put right and one of the most expensive to ignore.
- The trigger has gone sticky. Is that a housing part?
- Often it is just ink build-up around the trigger rather than a failed part, so clean it first. If it still does not return cleanly once it is clean, the trigger assembly is the part, and on most machines it comes as an assembly with its return spring rather than as a single moulding.
