Panels are specific to the machine body and, on machines with a touchscreen, to the controller behind it. Send the model plate and a photograph of the front of the machine.

Check it is not a lockout
Some machines lock the keypad in a run mode or under a supervisor setting. A panel that appears dead is sometimes doing what it was told.

Clean the edges
Ink creeping under the panel edge causes most dead keys. Wipe the perimeter with a barely damp lint-free cloth. Never flood a panel with solvent — that is how ingress starts.

Note whether the display still works
Keys dead with a working display usually means the panel; everything dead usually means the board or its connector.

Fit the replacement
These are joined by a flat flex cable. Release the connector catch rather than pulling the cable, and seat the new one square and fully before closing the catch.

Test every key
Work through the whole keypad, not just the one that failed. Ingress rarely stops at a single key.

- One key on my coder has stopped working. Does the whole panel need replacing?
- Usually yes, because a membrane keypad is a single sealed part rather than a set of individual switches. Before ordering, clean around the panel edges with a barely damp lint-free cloth: ink creeping under the edge is what kills keys, and a panel that has only just started failing sometimes recovers. If the display still works normally and only keys are dead, the panel is the fault rather than the board.
- My screen is blank but the machine still prints. What is wrong?
- That points at the display or its flat flex connector rather than at the machine, since the print path is clearly alive. It is worth reseating the flex cable before replacing anything. If the machine also refuses to start or loses stored messages, the board is the more likely cause.
