Handheld coder part

Battery for handheld batch coding printers

What lets the machine work away from a socket, which is most of the reason to own a handheld in the first place. Batteries age by charge cycle rather than by calendar, so replacement is normal maintenance.

Also known as: rechargeable battery · battery pack · Li-ion battery · coder battery

Parts are sold against your machine, not against a picture. Send the model plate and a photograph of the part in place and we confirm the fit in writing before anything is dispatched.

When this is the part that has failed

  • Runtime falling noticeably week on week
  • The machine only works plugged in
  • It charges to full and drops quickly under use
  • The pack is swollen, hot or will not seat

Does it fit my machine?

Capacity and connector are per machine, and a pack that physically fits is not necessarily the right one electrically. This is one part never to buy on appearance — send the model plate and, if you can, a photograph of the rating plate on the old pack.

Replacing it

  1. 1

    Confirm it is the battery

Run the machine on mains power for a shift. If it behaves perfectly plugged in and badly on battery, the pack is the fault rather than the machine.

  2. 2

Stop immediately if it is swollen

A swollen or hot pack is not a performance problem, it is a safety one. Take it out of service, do not charge it again, and dispose of it properly.

  3. 3

    Fit the new pack

Seat it fully until the catch takes. Check the contacts are clean and dry first.

  4. 4

Charge it fully before first use

Give a new pack a full uninterrupted charge before the first shift, so the machine calibrates against a true full.

  5. 5

Keep the old one out of the drawer

A retired lithium pack in a drawer is a hazard, not a spare. Dispose of it through a proper channel.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a handheld coder battery last on one charge?
It depends on the capacity of your pack and how much you are printing, so the honest answer is on your machine product page rather than here — we do not publish a blanket figure that a second model would make false. What is consistent is the shape of the decline: a pack that used to see out a shift and now needs a mid-shift charge is telling you it is near the end of its cycle life.
Can I keep the machine plugged in all the time instead?
You can run most machines on mains power, and it is a reasonable stopgap when a pack has failed mid-run. It is not a fix, because it turns a handheld into a tethered machine and you lose the mobility you paid for. It also tends to keep the pack at full charge continuously, which is not how lithium cells like to be stored.
Why can a battery not always be shipped to me?
Lithium cells are classed as restricted goods, so some couriers and some routes will not carry them, and air movement in particular is limited. It is not a stock problem. Tell us your pincode when you enquire and we will confirm what is possible before you pay, or you can collect from the Pune store.
