Handheld coder part

Charger and power adapter for handheld coders

The part most often replaced unnecessarily, and the one most often at fault when a battery is blamed. It is cheap enough that keeping a spare is simply sensible.

Also known as: power adapter · charging adapter · power supply · charging dock · mains adapter

Parts are sold against your machine, not against a picture. Send the model plate and a photograph of the part in place and we confirm the fit in writing before anything is dispatched.

When this is the part that has failed

  • The machine will not charge, or charges intermittently
  • The charge indicator flickers or never reaches full
  • The cable works only when held at an angle
  • The adapter runs unusually hot

What it is

Function
Charges the pack and runs the machine from mains
Usual cause of failure
A broken conductor at the plug end, from repeated flexing
Never substitute on
Voltage or polarity — a wrong adapter can damage the machine
Worth keeping spare
Yes — it is the cheapest part that stops a machine entirely

Does it fit my machine?

Voltage, current and plug are per machine. A connector that physically fits is not evidence that the output is right, and the wrong adapter is one of the few ways to damage a handheld from the outside. Send the model plate, and a photograph of the rating plate on the old adapter if it is legible.

Replacing it

  1. 1

Test the cable by flexing it

With the machine charging, flex the cable gently near each end. If the charge indicator flickers, the conductor is broken inside the insulation and the adapter is the fault.

  2. 2

Rule the adapter in before blaming the battery

A machine that will not charge is as likely to have a dead adapter as a dead pack, and the adapter is much the cheaper of the two to replace.

  3. 3

Match the output, not the plug

Check voltage, current and polarity against the old adapter rating plate. Never assume from the connector shape.

  4. 4

    Charge from empty once

Run one full charge cycle with the new adapter and confirm the machine reaches and reports full.

Frequently asked questions

My machine will not charge. Is it the battery or the charger?
Test the charger first, because it is cheaper and it fails more often. With the machine on charge, flex the cable gently near the plug and near the barrel: if the charge indicator flickers as you do it, a conductor is broken inside the insulation. If the adapter is sound and the machine still will not charge or will not hold a charge, then suspect the pack.
Can I use a generic adapter with the same plug?
We would not. A connector that physically fits tells you nothing about the voltage, the current or the polarity behind it, and a mismatch on any of the three is one of the few ways to damage a handheld from the outside. If you are replacing one, match it against the rating plate on the old adapter rather than against the shape of the plug.
