How do I know whether the holder or the cartridge is at fault?

Swap the cartridge for one you know prints. If the known-good cartridge also prints intermittently or is reported faulty, the holder or its contacts are the problem. If it prints cleanly, the original cartridge was the fault and the holder is fine.

Very often, yes, and it is always worth trying first. Power the machine off and wipe the pads with a lint-free cloth barely damp with the matching solvent. Do not use an abrasive and do not flood it. Try cleaning first
Power the machine down, and wipe the contact pads with a lint-free cloth barely damp with the matching solvent. Ink residue on the contacts causes most of what looks like holder failure.

Confirm it is not the cartridge
Fit a cartridge you know prints. If that one also misbehaves in this holder, the holder is the fault.

Remove the old holder
Take the cartridge out first, then the fasteners. Note which way the connector seats before you unplug it.

Fit and seat the new one
Seat the connector fully, tighten evenly, and check the catch holds a cartridge firmly with no rock.

Print a test message
Run a full message on scrap and move the machine while it prints. Intermittent contact shows up under movement, not standing still.
